Providence Community Church is now meeting on Saturday evenings (5:00pm) at the Highland Oaks Church of Christ in Plano.

We are so thankful to the pastors, staff, elders, and members of HOCC for graciously sharing their home with us each week. It is one thing to confess that the Kingdom of God is bigger than any one church, but it is another thing to actually function as if that is true. The willingness of HOCC to open their home to us is a demonstration both to our members and to the world that we are disciples of Jesus (John 13:35).

This is a huge move for our church. Over the past seven years we have met in homes, a furniture store, a community center, a day care, and for the past six years at the Art Centre of Plano. To worship each week in a dedicated church building, complete with children's classrooms and a real room dedicated to worship, is a giant step for us (this building is over four times bigger than our previous location).

We are excited to see what God has in store for this next season in the life of our church and we hope that you will be part of the story that he is writing!

Sunday, August 8th will be the final weekly worship gathering of Providence Community Church at the Art Centre of Plano. For almost six years, the Art Centre has served as home to us and we have loved every minute of it. We have known for some time now that the Art Centre no longer met our needs due to numerical growth in our church. The thought of ending such a great relationship has been uneasy for us, but as it turns out the timing could not have been more perfect. The Art Centre sold their facilities in downtown Plano and this meant that the decision to move was not only the right decision for us, but a necessary decision with a timeline.

The elders of our church have been praying diligently and seeking the Lord as to what's next for us. God has proved faithful to us and provided a great new location for us to worship in as a gathered community. A local church in the community has graciously opened their hearts and their facilities to us. Our members are aware of the new location, but out of respect for the members of the partnering church we will wait a couple of weeks before posting further information on our partnership on our website in order to allow everyone to be informed in a godly and respectable manner.

What we can tell you is beginning August 14th, we will begin gathering for weekly worship at 5pm on Saturday evenings. Our new location will provide four times more seating, first class children's ministry facilities, an excellent alll-purpose room for communal meals (capable of holding over 400 people), and much, much more. This location is approximately one mile from our current location, allowing us to maintain our presence in Plano.

We are truly excited and grateful for what the Lord is doing. There is lots more to share and we will be doing so within a couple of weeks, so please check back here soon.

We hope to see you soon on Saturday evenings!

*Update 01/14/2010 - As of 4:00pm CST the Red Cross estimates the death toll to be between 45,000 - 50,000 people. The figure we reported yesterday was the estimate given by the Haitian government at that time.

----

Shortly before 5pm on Tuesday, January 12th, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince in Haiti. As of the time of this post, the deathtoll is estimated at 100,000 people.

Providence Community Church has an existing partnership with Living Water International, through whom we have built and repaired clean water drinking wells in Liberia. Living Water International has been involved in Haiti for a long time now building and repairing wells in the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

According to Living Water Internatioinal:

Earthquakes destroy water systems. Pipelines break, electrical distribution systems fail, and hand-dug wells–—already questionable water sources–—are rendered useless or become contaminated with cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases.

“In Haiti, clean water is a terrible problem even at the best of times,” said LWI Executive Director Gary Evans. “After a quake like this, it’s a crisis of epic proportions.”

In response to this devestation, our church will be donating 10% of all unrestricted contributions for the month of January to Living Water International's Haiti relief fund. In addition, we invite you to make designated contributions to "Providence Community Church" and designate your gift "Haiti Relief Fund" or "Living Water International". Your gift will directly aid in restoring clean water to countless thousands of people.

Thank you for your continued prayers and generosity in this moment of unthinkable tragedy.

Contributions may be mailed to:

Prayer is essential to the Christain life and yet most Christains struggle when it comes to praying. There are a number of reasons for this, ranging from lack of understanding to lack of desire. Thankfully, God has not left us in the dark when it comes to praying. The Psalms have been considered a prayer book for both Jews and Christians alike for thousands of years. Sadly, most Christians today do not know how to approach the Psalms as a trustworthy guide to teach us how to pray.

Beginning Sunday, August 16th, we will begin a sermon series entitled Praying the Psalms. This series, which will last until Advent, will look in-depth at various Psalms with the purpose of learning how to pray. We invite you to join us as we continue on life's journey of loving God and loving others.
